Summary

FIFA 2000 arrived on the Game Boy Color as a stripped‑down version of EA’s flagship football series, handled by Tiertex Design Studios and released by THQ. In North America the cartridge carried the subtitle ‘Major League Soccer’, reflecting the first official MLS licence in the franchise.

Even on a handheld, the game kept the series’ new season‑mode, letting players guide a club through promotion, relegation and a shot at European competition. Commentary varied by region – the UK edition featured BBC voices John Motson and Mark Lawrenson, recorded in London after Motson’s rare trip to the Vancouver studio, while the US version heard ESPN’s Phil Schoen alongside former international Julie Foudy. The soundtrack borrowed Robbie Williams’ “It’s Only Us”, a tie‑in that even forced the inclusion of his supported club Port Vale despite the team’s absence from the main league list. Localised commentary was also provided for several European and Asian languages.

Critics were kinder to the console and PC releases; the Game Boy Color version lingered at a modest 47 % on GameRankings, whereas its siblings scored in the high‑80s. By the end of 2000 the title had moved half a million units, and the PC edition earned the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences’ Computer Sports Game of the Year award.
