Summary

F1 Racing Championship tries to capture the 1999 Formula One season with a level of detail that feels almost obsessive. While it arrived amid the dominance of Grand Prix 3 and the rising ISI F1 series, the title stumbled over a clunky AI and a damage model that could turn a simple scrape into a game‑breaking glitch. A promised patch never materialised, leaving many players to wrestle with the same bugs that hurt its sales.

The soundtrack even borrowed Garbage’s "Girl Don't Come," giving the menus a late‑90s grunge vibe that later resurfaced in Racing Simulation 3. This musical nod is one of the few highlights that survived the game’s rocky launch.

Gameplay is split into Single, Arcade, Grand Prix and Time Attack, with a ghost mode that projects the best lap as a transparent guide. The simulation side lets you tweak every vehicle parameter, from tire wear to fire‑risk on sudden acceleration, while driving aids like ABS and ideal racing lines soften the learning curve. The TV‑style banner interface constantly shows your distance to rivals, reinforcing the feeling of a live broadcast.

Multiplayer leans on LAN support for up to 22 racers and also offers a two‑player split‑screen, a rare feature for a title of its era. The ghost can even be set to your own previous best, turning solo practice into a competitive duel.

Developed by a 12‑person team using Ubisoft’s Revenge engine, the game maps each circuit with GPS data and 360‑degree footage, achieving a depth‑of‑field that stretches a kilometer. Despite these ambitions, the planned U.S. N64 version was cancelled, though Brazil saw a January 2001 release.

Critics were split: scores ranged from 5/10 in Electronic Gaming Monthly to 87% in 4Players, with many noting the game’s solid simulation core but sloppy presentation. The mixed reception reflects a title that aimed high but was held back by technical missteps.
