Summary

Dropzone is a horizontally scrolling shooter that captures the spirit of classic arcade action. Developed by Archer Maclean (working as Arena Graphics) and originally launched on the Atari 8‑bit line, the title later migrated to platforms as diverse as the Commodore 64, NES, Game Boy, Game Gear and finally the Game Boy Color, giving it a surprisingly broad legacy. The game feels like a love‑letter to Defender, borrowing the iconic font, alien designs and even the title screen while adding its own twists. You control a jet‑pack‑equipped hero armed with a laser, a cloaking device and three smart bombs, tasked with snatching scientists and ushering them back to the base’s dropzone amidst relentless alien waves. With 99 progressively tougher levels that loop back after the final stage, the challenge never truly fades.

Storyline

Dropzone puts you on the surface of Io, one of Jupiter’s moons, where a human scientific research base is under siege by hostile aliens. The base’s scientists are trapped and need rescuing. Armed with a jet‑pack, you can fly over the alien‑infested terrain. Your gear includes a laser for shooting, a cloaking device to slip past enemies, and three smart bombs for clearing tough spots. The goal is to locate each scientist, escort them back to the safety of the base, and survive the alien onslaught.
