Summary

Driver: You Are the Wheelman on the Game Boy Color surprised me with its top‑down perspective and surprisingly tight controls. Even though the hardware is limited, the game feels smooth, and each city feels distinct as you zip through Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York.

The core of the experience is a string of bite‑size missions – more than thirty in total – that demand different tactics. One moment you’re ramming an enemy getaway car, the next you’re sneaking a gang member out under a tight deadline, and a careless slip can have the police glued to your bumper.

Beyond the main objectives, the side modes add real replay value. Survival pits you against relentless cops in a frantic chase, while Getaway forces you to evade roadblocks and police tail‑cars with pure driving skill. Both modes sharpen the reflexes needed for the main missions.

Sound isn’t the strongest point, but the password save system keeps progress safe, and the lack of a battery save or two‑player mode never feels like a deal‑breaker. All in all, the handheld version captures the thrill of high‑speed chases without sacrificing the variety that made the original a hit.

Storyline

Driver – You are the Wheelman puts you in the shoes of NYPD detective and former race driver John Tanner, who is sent undercover by Lieutenant McKenzie. His first stop is Miami, where he proves his skill in a parking‑garage stunt and becomes a getaway driver for a local gang. After a series of jobs he meets the pimp Rufus, rescues Rufus’s associate Jean‑Paul, and witnesses Rufus’s murder by his girlfriend Jesse, who tells Tanner that Jean‑Paul has fled to San Francisco.

In San Francisco Tanner encounters Castaldi, the head of the crime syndicate, and his rival Rusty Slater, who also works for Castaldi. An informant named Mojo reveals that Castaldi is cooperating with presidential hopeful Don Hancock, and Tanner begins to suspect Slater of spying on him. A chase ends with Slater’s car wrecked and his arrest.

The action shifts to Los Angeles, where Castaldi plans to kill FBI agent Bill Maddox. Tanner’s police contact Lech arranges Maddox’s appearance, but the assassination fails and the police ambush the gang. Tanner convinces the gang that Slater betrayed them, while Lech informs him that FBI agent Marcus Vaughn is also in Castaldi’s pocket.

The syndicate moves to New York for a high‑profile hit, and Tanner learns the ultimate target is the President of the United States. Defying orders, he drives the President’s car to safety. McKenzie later offers Tanner his badge back, but Tanner, convinced that the police and FBI were complicit, walks away, abandoning his undercover life.
