Summary

Dragon Quest Monsters (released in North America as Dragon Warrior Monsters) feels like a love‑letter to the monster‑collecting craze of the late ’90s, but it quickly proves its own depth with a breeding system that dwarfs the usual catch‑and‑throw formula. Instead of battling with a human avatar, you coax wild creatures onto your side by tossing meat after a random encounter, then stash them in the Farm where up to 19 can stay awake and another 19 asleep, each slot preserving a different wilderness level.

The arena is a ladder of ranks—G, F, E, D, then C through S—each requiring three victories before the next gate opens. Winning ranks not only unlocks new worlds via hidden warp gates beneath the Great Tree, but also earns Tiny Medals that a mysterious collector (later revealed as the king) trades for rare monster eggs.

Breeding kicks in after you clear Class F: bring a male and a female of level 10 or higher to the Shrine of Starry Night, and you’ll receive an egg that inherits skills, stats, and a “plus” rating from its parents. The higher the plus, the steeper the hatching fee, but also the higher the monster’s maximum level. An Egg Evaluator lets you check or even change the gender for a fee, making multi‑generation breeding the only reliable path to the game’s toughest foes.

With over 200 monsters, each boasting up to eight unique skills, and more than 40,000 possible combinations, the game rewards meticulous training, strategic meat‑throwing, and endless experimentation—perfect for anyone who loves turning a modest critter into a legendary powerhouse.

Storyline

In Dragon Quest Monsters (known as Dragon Warrior Monsters on the Game Boy Color), the story begins before the events of Dragon Quest VI, when siblings Terry and Milly are still children. One night a strange monster snatches Milly, and shortly after another creature appears, claiming to be Watabou. Watabou tells Terry that his sister has been taken by the evil Warubou and urges him to travel to the Kingdom of GreatTree. There Terry meets the king, who gifts him Slib the slime as his first monster companion.

Determined to rescue Milly, Terry enters Terry’s Wonderland, a realm of kings, monsters and magic spells, and sets out to explore numerous monster dungeons. His goal is to win the Monster Trainer’s Starry Night Tournament, which will grant him a wish and the chance to become the world’s most powerful monster master. By gathering and training monsters, he hopes to defeat Warubou and bring his sister home.
