Summary

Rare’s 2000 Game Boy Color port of Donkey Kong Country manages to squeeze the original’s lush jungle atmosphere onto an 8‑bit screen. By recycling graphics and audio from the Donkey Kong Land series, the handheld version feels startlingly faithful despite inevitable downgrades. A redesigned stage and an entirely new level give longtime fans a fresh challenge while the core side‑scrolling platforming stays unchanged.

Players guide Donkey and Diddy across 40 vividly themed stages, swapping on the fly between Donkey’s raw power and Diddy’s swift agility. Along the way they can recruit animal buddies—Rambi the rhino, Enguarde the swordfish, Squawks the lantern‑carrying parrot, and others—to unlock new abilities and hidden routes. Collecting bananas, letters, balloons and animal tokens fuels extra lives and pushes the completion percentage toward a secret ending.

Beyond the main quest, the cartridge adds two minigames, Game Link Cable multiplayer, and even Game Boy Printer support. Critics praised the effort, and the title earned runner‑up spots in GameSpot’s Best GBC and Platform Game categories while moving over two million units worldwide.

Storyline

On a stormy night on Donkey Kong Island, Diddy Kong is left in charge of the Kongs' precious banana hoard as part of his hero‑training. While Diddy watches, King K. Rool and his Kremling minions break in, tossing Diddy into a barrel and stealing the bananas. Cranky Kong bursts into the treehouse, wakes Donkey Kong, and urges him to check the Banana Cave. Infuriated, DK promises to hunt every corner of the island to recover the stolen loot and rescue Diddy. Together, Donkey Kong and Diddy set out in Donkey Kong Country (GBC) to chase King K. Rool and his Kremlings, reclaim the banana hoard, and put an end to the crocodile’s thievery.
