Summary

Bionic Commando: Elite Forces feels like a love letter to handheld action games from the early 2000s. Nintendo Software Technology’s first title for the Game Boy Color brings back the franchise’s signature grappling mechanic while deliberately stripping away the ability to jump, forcing each swing to count.
The world unfolds on a Super Mario Bros. 3‑style map, letting me pick a female or male commando, swap weapons – from assault rifles to a rare sniper segment – and even choose items before diving into a level. Levels shift between classic side‑scrolls, tight top‑down shooter rooms, and occasional auto‑scrollers, all tied together with "codec" voice‑overs.
Boss encounters erupt in spacious arenas that demand careful use of the bionic claw and a toolbox that includes a rocket launcher and flame‑thrower. After the final showdown, an animated slideshow wraps the experience. Critics on GameRankings leaned favorably, noting the smooth blend of platforming variety and solid handheld controls.

Storyline

The peaceful land of Karinia is under siege by the ruthless Arturus, leader of the Avars. As the Elite Forces battle the invading army, they intercept a fragmented transmission from Commander Joe—presumably the legendary Super Joe—who had slipped behind enemy lines. Joe’s message warns that Arturus is preparing to activate the mysterious Albatross Project before the signal cuts out. Responding to the distress call, the Bionic Corps summons the Elite Forces to halt the Avars, safeguard Karinia, and rescue their missing ally. In a twist on the original 1988 Bionic Commando plot, the Albatross is revealed not as a weapon of a dead dictator but as a wrecked alien spacecraft whose technology can grant mutant powers to whoever controls it.
