Summary

BattleTanx on the Game Boy Color takes the original N64 action‑shooter and reshapes it into a top‑down 2D experience, even borrowing music cues from its sequel. You can choose from three distinct tanks – the speedy Moto Tank, the heavy‑hitting M1A1 Abrams MBT, and the massive Goliath – each feeling different as you blast through 17 single‑player stages set in iconic U.S. locales like New York, Chicago, Las Vegas and San Francisco, where virtually everything can be smashed apart. The multiplayer side supports up to four players and offers four distinct modes: Battlelord’s queen‑capture twist, classic Deathmatch to seven kills, Family Mode’s ammo‑locked deathmatch, and Annihilation where each competitor starts with five tanks and the last one standing wins. Despite the ambitious design, the handheld version was poorly received, landing around the low‑mid 40 % range on GameRankings and earning mixed scores such as 5/10 from IGN and 7.7/10 from Nintendo Power.

Storyline

In BattleTanx, the world has been devastated by a virus that wiped out 99 % of the female population. Nations scramble for the remaining quarantine zones, sparking a nuclear war that shatters civilization.

The surviving women, known as Queenlords, are hoarded by gangs that control isolated territories. Griffin Spade, the protagonist, loses his fiancée Madison when the U.S. government snatches her from Queens, New York. After New York is razed, Griffin commandeers a tank and begins a cross‑country trek to rescue her.

Along the way he battles rival gangs, survives the ruins of New York City, and picks up allies in the countryside, Chicago, Las Vegas and finally San Francisco, all in the hope of reuniting with Madison.
