Summary
Arle no Bouken: Mahou no Jewel landed on the Game Boy Color in early 2000, courtesy of Compile, the studio behind the Puyo Puyo series. Though it never shipped in the U.S., the game blends traditional RPG exploration with a card‑collecting twist that feels surprisingly fresh.
Players build decks of monster cards drawn from the Madou Monogatari universe, calling on Arle Nadja and familiar foes like Skeleton T and Schezo Wegey to fight in turn‑based battles. The cards aren’t just collectibles; each one summons a specific creature that brings its own attacks and abilities. This mechanic makes strategy revolve around which monsters you’ve gathered rather than just leveling a single party. It’s a charming oddity that showcases Compile’s willingness to experiment on handheld hardware.
Storyline
The story opens in *Arle no Bouken: Mahou no Jewel* when Arle and her companion Carbuncle arrive at Hero’s Village just in time for the local festival. A shimmering magical barrier suddenly encircles the town, and Saturni explains that the barrier is a yearly tradition that appears for the duration of the celebrations.
To learn more, Arle visits both Satan and the village elder Lunae, who fill her in on the Hero’s Village history and the ancient Hero’s Legend. Lunae recounts that ages ago a Hero erected the barrier and used the power of the stars to seal away a great evil.
Soon after, Arle watches a Puyo transform into a card and is warned that any Puyo left in card form after the next day will remain that way forever. Determined, she sets out to gather the Puyo cards and restore them to their true forms before time runs out.
