Summary
Action Man: Search for Base X drops you into a classic side‑scroll platformer where Alex “Action Man” Mann races through seven diverse zones—from dense jungles to frigid Arctic wastelands—battling Dr. X’s robotic army. I can sprint, jump, climb, swim and even pilot a space‑suit when the terrain demands it, switching between a parka, wet suit or space suit to handle each hazard. Before each mission I’m allowed to pick two weapons, often a pistol and a crossbow, and along the way I can uncover more powerful guns or a bow and arrow by veering off the main path.
The level design rewards exploration: alternate routes open only when I wear the right suit or carry the correct gadget, so I often replay stages to hit hidden objectives. The difficulty spikes are noticeable—tight controls and sudden enemies can feel unforgiving—but the vibrant colour palette and crisp sound effects keep the challenge engaging.
Critics gave it an above‑average score (around 68% on GameRankings), praising the audio‑visuals while calling the difficulty a bit harsh, especially for a Game Boy Color title released late in the platform’s life cycle.
Storyline
Action Man: Search For Base X puts you in the shoes of Alex “Action” Mann, a secret‑agent operative on a race against time. Dr. X, the series’ notorious villain, is preparing to unleash a weapon of mass destruction, and Mann must locate the hidden base where the device is being assembled. The game sends him across a variety of locales, each level a clue that brings him closer to the enemy’s lair.
As the player, you guide Mann through side‑scrolling missions that blend platforming and puzzle elements, hunting down intel and disabling security systems. Every stage reveals more of Dr. X’s plan, building tension toward the final showdown. The ultimate goal is simple but urgent: stop the weapon, destroy the base, and thwart Dr. X’s global threat.
