Summary
Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone drops you onto a grid where each turn is dictated by a single card. The card’s power, ACE (weapon type) and MOV (total movement) shape everything from damage to how far a squad can march. Unions are formed in gender‑specific patterns—X‑shaped for males and plus‑shaped for females—allowing up to eighty soldiers to clash in as many as five separate battles. After the fifteenth field, linked unions let you expand the core formation, and only one attack is permitted per turn. A tiny team of less than twenty‑five developers, led by Riviera’s Shinichi Ito, built the game; Sunaho Tobe handled card art while Satoko Kiyuduki designed characters. The near‑sixty‑track soundtrack, co‑composed by Shigeki Hayashi and Minako Adachi, changes tempo with Aggressive, Passive or Neutral modes. Atlus USA’s localization wrestled with cramped Japanese text boxes, prompting cuts and tone‑softening. Limited European publishing and scarce merchandise (metal keychain, tiny poster run) made it a cult‑favorite, earning “favorable” Metacritic scores and a 35/40 Famitsu rating.
Storyline
Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone opens in the tranquil kingdom of Fantasinia, a land ruled by a royal family said to be descended from the gods. Their peace is shattered when the Empire of Bronquia, led by the newly‑crowned Emperor Gulcasa after a brutal coup, sweeps across the continent, crushing the Royal Armies of King Ordene.
Princess Yggdra Yuril Artwaltz, the sole survivor of the royal line, flees with the holy sword Gran Centurio. On the southern tip of the continent she encounters the charismatic thief‑king Milanor, who becomes her reluctant ally in the fight to reclaim her homeland.
Together they gather a colorful cast: Durant of the Third Cavalry, teenage Undine Nietzsche, necromancer Roswell and witch Rosary, griffon rider Kylier, Astral Fencer Russell, hunter Cruz, assassin Elena and others, each driven by revenge or a personal quest against the Imperial forces.
The campaign pushes the Royal Army across the continent, confronting Gulcasa’s Dragon Generals and the Twin Valkyries. Depending on the player’s choices the story ends in three ways: a fatal game‑over, Yggdra’s triumph with the holy sword asserting her vision of justice, or a sacrificial ending that abandons the sword for the hope of universal peace.
