Summary

Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone (often just called Yggdra Union) drops you onto an overhead 2D battlefield where tiny, grid‑locked units act like chess pieces. Each squad is built around a leader and can recruit up to seven followers, letting you field up to eighty soldiers across five simultaneous clashes. The game’s heart is its card system: every card carries three numbers—Power, Ace and Movement—and a unique skill, dictating how far a unit can march, what attacks it can unleash, and how it can support allies.

Union formations are the signature twist. Male leaders arrange their troops in an X‑shaped pattern, while female leaders spread theirs in a plus shape, letting you strike multiple enemies in a single, coordinated attack. Units juggle six core stats—Morale, GEN, ATK, TEC, LUK, and an alignment‑based attribute—plus Reputation for your side or POW.UP for foes, while items can boost these numbers or restore Morale on the fly.

Battles unfold as linear turn sequences where you may end a turn whenever you wish, but you can only launch one union attack per turn. The GBA cartridge holds all this data without voice acting, relying on crisp battle sound effects and text beeps, and the soundtrack—co‑composed by Shigeki Hayashi and Minako Adachi—was later released as the Yggdra Union Perfect Audio Collection Plus.

Storyline

Yggdra Union begins with Princess Yggdra fleeing the besieged capital of Partina, clutching the holy heirloom Gran Centurio. The sword, a legendary blade passed down from Fantasinia’s divine founders, becomes the rallying symbol of her quest for justice, even as her army’s actions lead to civilian casualties. Yggdra’s journey takes her from a remote southern valley, where she allies with Milanor, the charismatic leader of a thieves’ band, to a full‑scale war against the Empire of Bronkia, ruled by the coup‑born emperor Gulcasa. The narrative follows her reclamation of Fantasinia from the Imperial forces and her eventual ambition to unite the entire world under her rule. Depending on the player’s choices, the game ends with a defeat, or with Yggdra either embracing the holy sword’s justice or sacrificing it to bring about universal peace.
