Summary
X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse is the first X‑Men title on the Game Boy Advance, delivering a side‑scrolling beat‑’em‑up that blends classic platform action with a lightweight fighting system. You can pick from Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm or Rogue, each equipped with their hallmark mutant power—Wolverine’s claws, Rogue’s charge, Storm’s tornado projectiles, and Cyclops’ optic blasts—and earn experience points to boost damage, agility or mutant energy between stages.
The game supports solo play or two‑player co‑op through its campaign, while its versus mode offers deathmatches, team‑against‑hordes, and capture‑the‑flag battles, letting friends swap characters on the fly.
Critics were mixed; Metacritic scored it 61 / 100 and GameRankings ~59 %, praising its fun factor for X‑Men fans but noting the short length and simplistic mechanics as drawbacks.
Storyline
In X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse, the team returns from the Mojoverse only to find the X‑Mansion reduced to ruins. They quickly learn they’ve been thrust into an alternate universe ruled by the tyrant mutant Apocalypse.
The heroes must cut a path through Apocalypse’s army of Sentinels and twisted mutants, hoping to locate a way back to their own reality. Familiar comic‑book locales appear, including the shattered X‑Mansion, the Blackbird’s hangar, and the war‑torn island of Genosha.
Players can choose from Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, or Rogue, each offering a distinct power set and playstyle. Throughout the trek, they face classic villains such as the Blob and Magneto as boss encounters.
Adding a twist, other X‑Men like Colossus and Nightcrawler have been corrupted by Apocalypse and serve as enemy combatants, reinforcing the sense of a world turned upside down.
