Summary
Wing Commander: Prophecy made its way to the Game Boy Advance thanks to Italy‑based Raylight Studios, which added a multiplayer mode and released the title through Destination Software. The handheld version runs on the VISION Engine, introduces fresh spacecraft and pits players against the insectoid Nephilim, an alien force that bursts through a wormhole a decade after the events of Wing Commander IV.
Gameplay offers a “basic” control scheme that couples pitch, yaw and roll for newcomers, and an “advanced” mode where each axis can be handled independently, even allowing the coupling to be disabled for aggressive maneuvers. Missions unfold in order, can be failed without halting progress, and grow tougher as the enemy gains momentum. Players lead a squad of NPC pilots—who may be killed or eject—and can wander the carrier TCS Midway between sorties to chat with crew members.
The title is notable for being the first main‑line Wing Commander released after series creator Chris Roberts departed Origin, borrowing its engine from Roberts’ unfinished "Silverheart" project. Syd Mead designed the Nephilim, and the FMV cutscenes feature returning faces such as Mark Hamill, Tom Wilson and Ginger Lynn Allen.
Critics gave the GBA port mixed or average scores on Metacritic; GamePro lamented the removal of the promised multiplayer feature and said the graphics only stood out when paired with a 3D accelerator, though the familiar story and gameplay were praised. The PC version, by contrast, collected several awards for action, simulation and graphics in its year of release.
Storyline
Wing Commander: Prophecy for the Game Boy Advance opens twelve years after the Kilrathi homeworld was destroyed, with the Terran Confederation commissioning a new class of megacarriers. The first ship, the Midway, is on its shakedown cruise under Navy Commodore Christopher "Maverick" Blair, and the player assumes the role of 2nd Lieutenant Lance Casey, son of the famed Major Michael "Iceman" Casey.
Casey and his friend Max "Maestro" Garrett are assigned to the Midway’s junior Diamondback Squadron, led by Lieutenant Jean "Stiletto" Talvert. A distress call from a Kilrathi cruiser leads them to an ambush by the mysterious Nephilim, during which Blair is captured and Casey must defend an abandoned relay station until help arrives.
The Midway then defends Kilrathi colonists in the T'lan Meth system, where Casey’s choices affect his relationship with Colonel Jacob "Hawk" Manley and the Kilrathi themselves. The crew later discovers a Nephilim plasma super‑weapon, grafts it onto the Midway, and uses a risky primer charge to annihilate an enemy fleet.
In the final act, Casey assaults the Nephilim wormhole gate in the Kilrah system, disabling seven shielded towers with the help of Colonel John "Gash" Dekker’s Marines. Blair returns in a shuttle to shut down the last tower but is killed in the explosion, and Casey returns to the Confederation as a celebrated hero, while Blair is listed missing in action.
