Summary
Van Helsing on the Game Boy Advance tries to squeeze the 2004 Stephen Sommers horror‑action film into a handheld format, but the result feels more like a cautionary tale for rushed ports. The graphics are especially unforgiving on the tiny screen; sprites turn muddy and pixelated, making it hard to tell friend from foe. When the action ramps up, the frame rate collapses, and multiple enemies on‑screen cause severe slowdown that turns combat into a sluggish slog. Even though the premise promises monster‑hunting thrills, the technical shortcomings dominate the experience, earning it a reputation as one of the lowest‑rated GBA titles on Metacritic. In short, the game’s ambition is eclipsed by its clunky execution.
Storyline
In 1887 Paris, Van Helsing pursues Dr. Jekyll after a string of murders. Jekyll uses the attic of Notre‑Dame as a lab, drinks a potion and becomes the stronger, faster Mr. Hyde. Hyde taunts Helsing about lost memories before the hero hurls him out of a church window, ending the fight. The Holy Order in the Vatican then commissions Helsing to hunt Dracula and locate a woman named Anna Velarious, warning him of overwhelming undead forces.
Helsing arrives at a Transylvanian train station where a ghost beckons him onward. Skeletons rise from the streets of Vaseria, and a pale, robed figure attacks him before fleeing. Inside the village church he meets the three Brides of Dracula; one, Marishka, falls, while Anna Velarious awakens, explaining she seeks her missing brother, Velkan, who was bitten by a werewolf. She leads Helsing to the library where Velkan once studied Dracula.
Cardinal Jinette orders Helsing to eliminate Igor, a torturer of the Velarious family. The ghost reappears, calling Helsing "Gabriel" and identifying itself as Velarious before being dispersed by Igor. Helsing battles Velkan’s wolf form, which reverts to human to warn him of Dracula, then transforms back and escapes. The chase leads to Castle Frankenstein, where Dracula greets Helsing as an ancient friend and recounts a betrayal that dates back four centuries.
In the castle’s caverns Helsing discovers Frankenstein’s monster, used by Dracula to grant permanent life to his vampire offspring. After a series of fights with Velkan, the Brides, and a collapsing castle, Helsing and Anna flee in a carriage rigged with a vampire‑killing bomb that destroys one Bride. Velkan returns, bites Helsing, grants him lycanthropy, and dies.
At Dracula’s Castle Helsing frees Anna from a cross, defeats the final Bride Aleera, and releases the monster‑generator. At midnight he transforms into a werewolf, slays Dracula’s demon form, but Anna is killed while trying to cure him. The story ends with Helsing, now human again, watching Anna’s soul depart, haunted by his forgotten past.
