Summary

Tony Hawk's American Sk8land landed on the Game Boy Advance as the series’ fifth handheld entry, acting as a direct companion to the console’s American Wasteland. While it carries the same soundtrack, environments, and roster of characters, the handheld version swaps the console’s full‑3D graphics for a clever cel‑shaded style that still feels true to the original vibe.

The GBA spin‑off adopts an isometric viewpoint, rendering skaters as low‑poly models against pre‑rendered backdrops. This combination tricks the eye into a three‑dimensional sensation without taxing the handheld’s hardware, letting players pull off tricks and explore familiar spots in a surprisingly immersive way.

Storyline

Tony Hawk's American Sk8land follows a young up‑and‑coming skateboarder from the Midwest. After crushing a local competition, the rider is approached by Tony Hawk, who offers a trip to Los Angeles to experience the West Coast style. In L.A. they meet Mindy, a skate‑enthusiast and aspiring comic artist who wants to publish a comic called American Sk8teland, named after Tony’s old favorite skatepark.

The group discovers the park is dilapidated and decides to renovate it, hoping to restore its former glory. As the work progresses, other pro skaters lend a hand, and Mindy learns a publishing office in East L.A. will distribute her comic if she can provide a video showing the park’s comeback. Meanwhile, the park’s owner has accepted an offer to sell, giving the crew two weeks to match the price before demolition.

After helping Rodney Mullen pull off a flat‑land demo, the team films the pros performing tricks around the rebuilt park. Tony convinces the newcomer to land a Japan 900 to cap the demo, and the resulting video becomes a hit. The success supplies Tony with enough money to buy the skatepark and gives Mindy the material she needs to launch her comic.
