Summary

Tomato Adventure feels like the missing link between classic turn‑based RPGs and the zany minigame‑filled Mario & Luigi titles that would follow. Instead of random battles, enemies stroll across the overworld and fights begin when you bump into them, letting you scout threats beforehand. The combat itself demands timing—pressing buttons, stopping moving meters, or mashing controls—to boost attack effectiveness, which adds a surprisingly kinetic layer to the leveling grind. I’m intrigued by the game’s history: it started as the GBC project Gimmick Land, was revamped for the GBA with richer audio and visuals, and even spawned a quirky tomato giveaway contest at launch.
Even though Nintendo never brought it to English‑speaking markets, a fan translation landed in 2021, opening the experience to a wider audience. Critics at release gave it solid scores—Famitsu 29/40 and a praised “A” from 1UP—while noting a steep learning curve in the battle system. The unreleased Chinese iQue version reminds you how the title hovered on the brink of wider success before piracy concerns killed the plan.

Storyline

In Tomato Adventure, the Ketchup Kingdom is ruled by youthful citizens, but a hare‑like boy named DeMille—clad in blue and living in a wheel‑less school bus on the outskirts village of Cobore—is shunned for hating tomatoes. Those who share his disdain are labeled “Droppers,” exiled to Cobore until they change their views.

One day DeMille watches King Abīra celebrate Tomato Day and unveil the Super Cara‑Cooker, a laser‑like device that turns everything into toys. After his TV is smashed, neighbor Seremo repairs it and gifts DeMille a Gear Yo‑Yo. DeMille’s girlfriend Patharan urges him to explore the Toy Ruins for the Fantastic Toy Gimmick Robo, but they are ambushed by the zipper‑backed Brikky and Grikky, who whisk them onto the airship Carorna No.2. The duo drops DeMille into Tomato Pond, near the red‑topped Gimmick Palace.

A mole named Rereku tells DeMille he must defeat six Super Kids and collect their Toy Parts to breach the palace wall. Along the way he recruits Arisa, Sofubi, and Rereku himself, setting out to rescue Patharan, topple King Abīra, and free the Ketchup Kingdom.
