Summary
The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night turns the handheld into a surprisingly deep 3‑D action platformer. You guide Spyro through linear stages, battling hordes with his signature head‑butt while gradually regaining the four elemental breaths—fire, ice, earth and electricity—taught by the Chronicler in dream sequences. A brand‑new "Dragon Time" ability lets you slow the world, making fast‑moving platforms reachable and giving you a tactical edge in fights.
Puzzle‑solving and exploration take a bigger role than in the first GBA entry; switches, hidden paths, and forty collectible quills (each unlocking five pieces of concept art) pepper the levels. Defeating enemies yields blue gems for power upgrades, while purple gems are required to unleash powerful furies, the game’s massive elemental blasts.
The title even features voice work from Elijah Wood, Gary Oldman and Billy West, adding a cinematic flair to the portable experience. Critics on Metacritic gave the GBA version favorable reviews, noting its blend of combat, puzzles, and the fresh Dragon Time mechanic.
Storyline
The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night picks up where A New Beginning left off, with the black dragon Cynder freed but still searching for her place. A new foe, Gaul the Ape King, rises and plots to resurrect the ancient Dark Master during the Night of Eternal Darkness.
Spyro chases Cynder through the swamp surrounding the Dragon Temple, only to watch the temple fall under a sudden ape assault. Ignitus, the fire dragon leader, dispatches Spyro to locate a mysterious tree from a vision, while also seeking allies against the apes.
The tree transforms into the monster Arborick (called Naga on the GBA) and, after its defeat, Spyro is captured by pirates and forced into gladiatorial combat. He eventually frees himself, defeats pirate captain Skabb, and discovers the apes have established a base on the Mountain of Malefor, the Well of Souls, where they keep Cynder as a pawn.
The Chronicler reveals the Dark Master’s history and warns Spyro to stay hidden, but Spyro rescues Cynder. During the lunar alignment, Spyro is briefly turned dark, shatters Gaul, and then, with Cynder’s help, encases the trio in crystal as the Well collapses. The credits show the Chronicler observing the crystal, hinting that Spyro will awaken to a changed world, but he will not be alone.
