Summary
The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning reboots the classic series with a surprisingly gritty, combat‑heavy spin on the purple dragon’s origins. Instead of the platform‑centric puzzles of earlier titles, the GBA version thrusts Spyro into six linear levels punctuated by two rail‑shooter sky segments, each packed with elemental breath attacks—fire, electricity, ice, and earth—and massive furies that feel like a dragon’s version of a super move. The combat loop is fast‑paced but, as many reviewers noted, can become repetitive after the roughly six‑hour playthrough.
What really sets this version apart is its star‑studded voice cast: Elijah Wood brings a youthful edge to Spyro, Gary Oldman lends gravitas to Ignitus, David Spade adds comic flair as Sparx, and Cree Summer gives Cynder a haunting presence. Development notes reveal Krome Studios were tapped after impressing Vivendi with Crash Bandicoot tech, leading to a prototype that evolved into this title.
Critics were split—IGN praised the ambitious presentation and solid core gameplay, while Eurogamer warned newcomers of a sloggy experience. The GBA port earned generally unfavorable scores for its visuals and short length, yet the game still snagged a nomination for Children’s Game of the Year at the Interactive Achievement Awards, cementing its quirky place in Spyro’s legacy.
Storyline
The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning opens in a temple where the red dragon Ignitus guards a rare purple dragon egg during the Year of the Dragon. When the Dark Master’s forces attack, Ignitus flees with the egg, which drifts into a swamp and is found by a family of dragonflies who raise the hatchling as Spyro, alongside his fellow dragonfly Sparx.
Years later Spyro discovers his fire‑breathing ability, learns he is not a dragonfly, and leaves the swamp to find his true home. He reunites with Ignitus, who warns that the Dragon Temple is now occupied by the black female dragon Cynder and her dark army, and sends Spyro to rescue three captured dragons—Volteer, Cyril, and Terrador—granting him electricity, ice, and earth powers along the way.
After freeing the trio, Spyro confronts Cynder; Ignitus intervenes but is captured, revealing that the four original dragons sealed the Dark Master and that Cynder is using their stolen powers to break the seal. Spyro storms Cynder’s fortress, defeats her, and frees her from the Dark Master’s control, restoring her to her true form as a young female dragon.
The battle leaves Spyro weakened, but both he and Cynder suspect the Dark Master still lurks somewhere, setting the stage for the sequel, The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night.
