Summary
Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2 feels like a love letter to anyone who grew up with the main Tales saga. On the Game Boy Advance it packs a hefty roster of heroes from across the series, letting you swap costumes and skills as if you were truly cos‑playing their legendary deeds. The game introduced the “Cosplay RPG” tag, a nod to its blend of familiar faces and dungeon‑crawling loops that are brisk yet tactical thanks to the Condensed Linear Motion Battle System. Even though it never left Japan after its October 2002 launch, the title earned a solid 32/40 from Famitsu, proving the spin‑off could stand on its own. I still crack it open when I’m hunting for that crunchy 8‑bit crunch.
Storyline
Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2 follows apprentice blacksmith Frio Sven, a hot‑headed youth who constantly drags himself into trouble, much to the irritation of logical heroine Kyaro Olange. Kyaro, fascinated by the village elder’s tales, often plays the adult, pulling Frio out of danger while dealing with his obliviousness to her hidden feelings. The pair’s world is threatened by the enigmatic antagonist Thanatos, who can possess heroes using black crystals and vows to cleanse the world of "human filth" and the two goddesses Ada and Stella. Ada, the gentle goddess of the future, summons heroes from other realms to aid Frio and Kyaro, while her sisters Ciel, the selfless goddess of the present, and Stella, the curious goddess of the past, watch over the Great Tree. Together, the heroes must confront Thanatos and protect the goddesses to restore balance.
