Summary

The Game Boy Advance port of Tales of Phantasia feels like a hybrid of its two console ancestors. It keeps the PlayStation remake’s voiced characters, lower encounter rate and subtle gameplay tweaks, while restoring the Super Famicom’s original opening cutscene and its classic two‑dimensional world map. This blend gives longtime fans a familiar feel without sacrificing the polish added on later platforms.

Combat runs on the series‑defining Linear Motion Battle System, where you control the main hero in real time as the screen scrolls left or right to follow the action. A pause menu lets you summon spells or items, and you can assign shortcuts to buttons for quick combos. Party members can be set to passive, active, or manually commanded, which was a fresh take compared to traditional turn‑based RPGs.

The soundtrack was crafted by Motoi Sakuraba, Shinji Tamura and Ryota Furuya. The Japanese GBA release featured Yukari Yoshida’s theme “Yume wa Owaranai,” but the English version swapped it for an original instrumental due to licensing.

Western critics gave the title roughly 73‑76 % scores, praising its real‑time battles and nostalgic charm while noting the heavy random‑battle pacing and a rough‑around‑the‑edges localization. Graphics and audio still hold up years after the original launch, and the game moved about 314 000 units worldwide, with Chester even earning a spot on Game Informer’s best‑character list for his emotional arc.

Storyline

Tales of Phantasia follows Cress Albane, a 17‑year‑old swordsman from the village of Aselia, whose home is razed by the dark knight Mars. After his parents are killed, Cress teams up with his childhood friend Chester Burklight, the priestess Mint Adenade, the spirit‑summoner Claus F. Lester, and the half‑elf mage Arche Klein. Their quest begins when they discover that Mars has broken the seal on the ancient sorcerer king Dhaos, who had been imprisoned centuries earlier by four heroes.

Using a time‑travel device hidden in the ruins of Thor, Cress and Mint are sent a hundred years into the past, before Dhaos’s original sealing. There they recruit Arche and Claus, battle Dhaos’s demon armies, and eventually return to their own era with the Eternal Sword, the only weapon capable of stopping Dhaos’s temporal powers. A future traveler named Harrisson warns them that Dhaos has already begun ravaging the world, prompting the party to journey forward again.

In the final timeline the group is joined by Suzu Fujibayashi, an 11‑year‑old ninja, and together they confront Dhaos in his invisible fortress. After a hard‑won victory, a tree spirit named Martel reveals Dhaos’s true motive: he is a visitor from the dying planet Derris‑Kharlan, seeking a mana seed from the world‑tree Yggdrasil to save his world, but his actions threaten humanity’s own mana supply.

With the seed launched into space by Martel, Cress and his allies return to their proper times, having saved Aselia while leaving the fate of Derris‑Kharlan uncertain.
