Summary
Tak: The Great Juju Challenge drops you into a worldwide competition where the Pupanunu Tribe’s champions, Tak and Lok, must out‑run rival tribes, dodge mischievous Jujus, and survive wild animal attacks. The game’s core is an obstacle‑course race that rewards speed, clever use of items, and taking down foes, turning each level into a frantic puzzle‑run.
You can tackle the challenge solo by swapping between Tak and Lok, or grab a friend for split‑screen co‑op, where teamwork becomes essential for solving the unique puzzles and mastering the combat system. The blend of time‑pressured strategy and brawling keeps the pace lively, especially when the clock ticks down.
On the Game Boy Advance the title earned mixed or average reviews, yet it still snagged nominations for Children’s Game of the Year and Best Animated Video Game, highlighting its charm despite the handheld’s limitations.
Storyline
Jibolba summons the player to the Pupanunu Village, announcing that it will host the Great Juju Challenge—the first in sixty years. Meanwhile, Tak and Lok trek to Feathercrag to capture a Phoenix feather, battling Woodies and finally snatching a feather after the Phoenix is seized by two mysterious men.
In the Juju Realm, the Moon Juju introduces the four competing teams: Jibba Jabba, Grammazon, Pupanunu, and Black Mist. After the first three challenges the teams face a Proving Grounds match; Black Mist is eliminated, only to be reinstated when the Two‑Headed Juju reveals a scoring error. A second round of three challenges and another Proving Grounds sees Black Mist removed again, this time replaced by Flora and Fauna, who are disqualified for using Grammazon teeth from the Salt Lick of Performance Enhancement.
Later, Bartog and Crug conspire with an unknown Juju, plotting to destroy Pupanunu Village once they win. Tak and Lok discover Crug tied up at the Gates of Nocturne; he confesses the Dark Juju’s cheating and directs them to Caster’s Hill, then Ambush Grove, where he hands Lok the Ancient Hammer of Handy Juju after defeating an invisible lizard.
The final Proving Grounds pits Tak and Lok against Bartog, a disguised "Crug," and the Moon Juju. The Dark Juju declares his love for the Moon Juju, but after three rounds Tak and Lok emerge victorious, earning the Moon Juju’s favor and securing the Great Juju Challenge.
