Summary

Tak 2: The Staff of Dreams carries the same side‑scrolling charm of its predecessor, but the GBA version tweaks a few core mechanics that change the feel of each run. Instead of having his wooden staff glued to his side, Tak must actually draw it out, and his mana is tracked by a simple meter rather than the feather count that counted down in the original. The game also leans more heavily on animal companions – several new critters appear to help with puzzles and combat, expanding the jungle’s ecosystem. Juju magic feels more like a combo system now; you hold one button and press a sequence to unleash spells, and the powers themselves are unlocked gradually as you progress instead of being scattered across hidden locations. Despite shipping close to a million copies, the handheld port earned generally unfavorable reviews on Metacritic, a stark contrast to the series’ usual reception.

Storyline

Following the first game, Tak finds himself stuck in the Dream World for sixteen days while Jibolba and Lok try to wake him. The Dream Juju tells him he must defeat the Dream Guardian and claim the Staff of Dreams to escape.

Throughout the quest Tak slips through rifts back to the real world, allowing Jibolba to join him. Together they rescue Jibolba’s brother JB, who guides them into the tower where the Dream Guardian dwells. Tak seizes the staff, only to learn the Dream Juju is actually his old foe Tlaloc, and the princess is a pair of henchmen, Pins and Needles.

Tlaloc grabs half of the staff, forming the Staff of Nightmares, while Tak keeps the Dream Shaker. The split power pulls everyone into the real world; Pins, Needles and Tlaloc flee, and Tak pursues them before being knocked out. The Moon Juju later empowers Tak, he defeats Tlaloc‑turned‑nightmare, and the Dream Guardian finally returns him to reality. Jibolba and Lok wake him, claiming it was all a dream, as a sheep from Tlaloc’s army watches from the shadows.
