Summary
Super Robot Wars J caps off the Game Boy Advance era of the series, and its battle animations feel surprisingly on par with the PlayStation 2 entries. The visual polish makes each clash feel weighty, even on the handheld’s modest screen.
The game builds on familiar mechanics while adding fresh twists: the Favorite Series system lets you boost upgrade paths for three chosen series per playthrough, and you can expand that pool on subsequent runs. Relationship Bonuses reward adjacent allies with better dodge and attack stats, echoing the emotional ties from earlier titles. Unit Switching lets docked mechs swap out for fresh units, up to three times per battleship after upgrades. You can even remix a character’s theme via the BGM Change feature, though special‑attack cues still override your choice. Replay Bonuses preserve stat points, upgrades, and unlock Spirit Commands for new magic‑like abilities, while every attack now boasts full animation.
The roster is a nostalgic mash‑up, featuring Banpresto Originals, classic mechs like Dancouga, Mazinkaiser, Combattler V, Voltes V, and newer entries such as Full Metal Panic! and Nadesico. Notably, the Getter Robo franchise is absent, and this is one of only two SRW games that skip Gundam’s Universal Century timeline, yet it breaks new ground by including a battle‑armor series that isn’t a traditional robot anime.
Storyline
Super Robot Wars Original Generation: The Moon Dwellers (often called Super Robot Taisen J on the GBA) lets players pick one of two main heroes. Touya Shiun is a 17‑year‑old high‑schooler with a strong sense of justice who initially hesitates to fight, but he eventually takes up arms of his own accord; he’s voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki. The other option, Calvina Coulange, is a 22‑year‑old ex‑Alliance Space Forces lieutenant nicknamed “White Lynx” for her piloting skill; after a mysterious attack wipes out her moon‑base lab, she survives as the sole injured survivor and becomes a quiet, reserved instructor, voiced by Masumi Asano. Before each battle, players also choose a co‑pilot, each bringing unique "Spirit Commands" and personalities: the stoic leader Katia Grignarl (Yoko Hikasa), the cheeky, big‑appetite Festenia Muse – often called Tenia (Nao Toyama), and the unpredictable yet sweet‑toothed Melua Melna Meia (Ai Kayano). These choices shape how the story unfolds from different fronts.
