Summary

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 brings the classic NES platformer to the Game Boy Advance with a visual polish borrowed from the Super Mario All‑Stars SNES version. Charles Martinet’s voice work adds a new layer of personality, while the e‑Reader slot unlocks up to 32 extra stages, power‑up cards, demo cards and even a Cape Feather from Super Mario World, letting players expand the adventure far beyond the original map. The game also includes a multiplayer Mario Bros. mini‑game that supports one to four players and a replay‑saving feature for bragging rights.

Beyond the familiar power‑ups—Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Tanooki, Frog and Hammer suits—the GBA edition adds items like a whistle, hammer and cloud, and its world map features dynamic elements such as lowering bridges and roaming Hammer Bros. The European launch initially omitted e‑Reader support, but later virtual‑console releases restored the full card content, and the title resurfaced on the Wii U Virtual Console (2015‑16) and Nintendo Switch Classics (2023) with every extra level intact.

Critically, the game earned a Metacritic score of 94/100, sold nearly 3 million copies in North America, and secured a Silver ELSPA award in the UK, cementing its reputation as one of the highest‑rated Game Boy Advance experiences.

Storyline

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 (often just called Super Mario Advance 4) puts you in the shoes of Mario or Luigi as they journey across the eight kingdoms of the Mushroom World. Their goal is to rescue Princess Peach, who has been captured by Bowser. To reach her, the brothers must track down the seven Koopa Kids, each of whom has stolen a magic rod from a kingdom’s ruler. The stolen rods have turned the kings into strange creatures, adding a quirky twist to each world. After reclaiming the rods and freeing the kings, the final showdown with Bowser awaits.
