Summary
Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2 drops you into a top‑down world where every breakable object is a potential treasure chest. Smashing crates, boulders, or even trees with the right tool—knuckles, drills, spears, swords or axes—yields random items that respawn when you leave and return, while fixed chests hold a single, permanent reward. When a group of foes appears, the screen flips to a 2‑D side‑scroll arena where real‑time action reigns. You can juggle up to three weapons, swapping on the fly, and supplement attacks with spells and items. Each weapon’s durability ticks down; once it hits zero you’re forced to swing the trusty hammer until you can repair or replace your gear. The heart of the game is its crafting loop. A shapestone—one of five types—acts as a blank canvas; add a material and you forge a weapon whose power mirrors the material’s quality. As your crafting skill rises you can upgrade weapons, embed special traits, or even dismantle them to reclaim the shapestone, though any spent materials vanish forever. Repair shops restore durability, even for broken tools. Critics praised the sequel’s sharper graphics and witty dialogue, noting it feels more polished than its predecessor. The main gripe was the thin story and the amount of back‑tracking required across a limited set of areas, a point that kept some reviewers from giving it a perfect score.
Storyline
Summon Night: Swordcraft 2 (also known as Craft Sword Monogatari 2: Caravan) follows an orphan of the Colthearts clan, raised by a seasoned Craftknight and dreaming of becoming one themselves. Players choose either Edgar or Aera Colthearts, both Edge Fencers, who stumble upon an abandoned ruin where the violent Summon Beast Goura is awakened. To protect their new family, the hero bonds with a stray Summon Beast and sets out to reseal the ruin.
The journey takes the protagonist across strange lands, battling monsters and meeting a host of humans, spirits, and other creatures while uncovering the mystery of their father's past and a hidden power within their own body and soul. Along the way, they encounter four possible Guardian Beasts, each selected early by the injured creature the player spots on the road; the chosen Guardian Beast becomes a lifelong partner, influencing dialogue but not the core plot.
Through these trials, the orphan matures into a true Craftknight, mastering both swordcraft and the magical aid of their summoned companion as they strive to restore balance to the world.
