Summary

Steel Empire (sometimes called The Steel Empire) lands on the Game Boy Advance with a striking steampunk vibe that feels like an alternate 19th‑century war zone. Propeller‑driven biplanes, dirigibles, and massive steam‑powered trains dominate the skies, while the player pilots a sleek Silverhead fighter launched from the floating carrier Rheinhalt.

The game plays as a multi‑directional side‑scroller where you can fire both ahead and behind, a rarity for its era. Two ships – the Striker and the Z‑01 – can be upgraded independently, gaining firepower every three power‑ups up to twenty levels, and even transform into a submarine in stage three before venturing into space for the finale.

Power‑ups range from heat‑seeking bolts and speed‑boosting electricity to autonomous drones and the devastating "Imamio Thunder" lightning bomb. Lives and continues are limited, and using a continue preserves your level but resets the score, adding a tense risk‑reward layer to each encounter.

Originally a Hot‑B classic on the Genesis, the GBA version was rebuilt by Starfish Inc. and brought to Western audiences by Zushi Games in 2005, earning praise for preserving the original’s frantic, every‑direction shooting while adapting the action to a handheld screen.

Storyline

Steel Empire (often just called Steel Empire) drops you into a steampunk‑inspired "Age of Steel" set in the 18XX era. The world is ruled by the iron‑fisted General Styron, whose Motorhead empire relies on massive floating battleships, coal‑driven locomotives and ruthless missile defenses. A lone free nation, the Republic of Silverhead, has fled to Antarctica and developed geothermal, sustainable and even cold‑fusion power, giving them a technological edge over Styron’s steam‑obsessed forces.

You play as a Silverhead ace pilot launched from the colossal airborne carrier Rheinhalt. Each mission offers a choice of two aircraft, and you begin by defending the mining town of Rahl in Patagonia from a Motorhead assault. Subsequent sorties take you through the underground caverns of Liedengel, the sky‑bound district Zektor, and the heavily fortified Gardandi Islands that guard the capital, Damd.

The climax pits you against Styron’s space‑cannon launch, forcing a chase into orbit and then beyond the atmosphere. His flagship unfurls a solar‑sail leviathan, and the final duel erupts over the moon. Victory sees Styron’s ship crash into the lunar surface while the credits roll, leaving the fate of the Silverhead pilot ambiguous.
