Summary
SSX 3 on the Game Boy Advance feels like a strippedādown snowboarding arcade that still manages to keep the seriesā signature rush. The handheld version compresses the 3āD world into two mountains instead of the three youād see on consoles, and the tracks are simplified, but the core loop of racing, bigāair jumps and superāpipe tricks remains intact. From the map you pick any of the 12 eventsāraces, bigāair, superāpipe or freestyle challengesāand each win dishes out cash that you can spend on gear upgrades, while pulling off grabs, flips and spins fills the boost meter for that extra burst of speed.
The trick system mirrors the consoleās adrenaline meter: the more varied combos you string together, the faster the meter fills and the more advanced "über" tricks you unlock. Controls can feel a bit sluggish, and reviewers noted the graphics engine struggling to keep up with the onāscreen action, which landed the GBA port at a middling 63 on Metacritic. Still, some critics praised its ambitious 3āD engine as unrivaled on the system, and the variety of events keeps the gameplay from feeling repetitive despite the reduced mountain size.
Storyline
In SSX 3 for the Game Boy Advance, the singleāplayer story drops you onto a fictional mountain where the SSX Championship unfolds. You pick from a roster of familiar facesāmany of whom have been in earlier SSX titlesāand set out to become the worldās top snowboarder. The mode is all about racing down the slopes, pulling off massive tricks, and racking up victories. Each win pushes you closer to the championship crown, while the variety of characters lets you experience the same core goal from different styles. The focus stays on pure snowboarding competition rather than a deep narrative.
