Summary
Spyro 2: Season of Flame (often just called Season of Flame) picks up where the GBA’s Season of Ice left off, bringing back familiar faces like Hunter, Bianca, and even letting you hop into Sheila the Kangaroo or Agent 9 the Monkey for a change of pace. The game sticks to an isometric perspective, which feels like a nod to the earlier handheld titles while still keeping the world feeling spacious.
One of the quirkiest twists is the fire/ice breath toggle – you can freeze fireflies and enemies with icy blasts, then switch to flame to melt obstacles or power up special gates. Certain items only respond to one element, so swapping breaths becomes a mini‑puzzle in itself, and portals scattered around the Dragon Realms whisk you to side‑quests where Rhynocs have taken over.
Gems litter every corner, hidden in baskets, vases, or behind breakable walls, and they’re the currency for Moneybags’ services. Sparx doubles as your health meter, changing color as you take hits, and you can feed him butterflies (or the occasional extra‑life bug) to restore yourself.
When the game hands you the controls over to Agent 9, you get a faster, laser‑armed monkey who can restock ammo in hidden rooms; switch to Sheila and you’ll enjoy higher jumps and a powerful kick. Both characters add a fresh layer of strategy without straying from Spyro’s core platforming feel.
The soundtrack, crafted by Robert Baffy with contributions from Ed Cosico, earned praise alongside the game’s colorful graphics and varied puzzles. Critics noted the controls could feel stiff on the D‑pad, but overall the title scored solidly on Metacritic and moved about 670,000 units in the U.S., proving it resonated with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
Storyline
In Spyro 2: Season of Flame, the Dragon Realms are plunged into cold after the Rhynocs steal every firefly. Without the fireflies’ magic, the dragons—including Spyro—lose the ability to breathe fire, and the temperature begins to drop, threatening a mass migration. Spyro returns from his previous adventure in Season of Ice to find the realms infiltrated and the fireflies gone.
Guided by Sparx, Bianca, and Hunter, Spyro learns from a fairy that the thief is the sorcerer Ripto. The team battles Ripto’s minions, Crush and Gulp, before confronting Ripto himself inside a volcano. Defeating him releases the fireflies, restoring warmth and fire breath to the Dragon Realms.
