Summary
SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman on the Game Boy Advance plays as a classic side‑scrolling platformer. Players guide SpongeBob through five distinct zones – his pineapple house, Jellyfish Fields, Sandy’s Treedome, the Krusty Krab, a Doubloon Bonus World, and finally the Flying Dutchman’s ship – collecting ten hidden treasures and unlocking three keys along the way. Levels reward exploration with doubloons and support replay to find missed items.
The GBA edition proved a commercial hit, moving roughly 740,000 copies and earning a #31 spot on Edge’s “Century’s Top 50 Handheld Games” list in 2006. Nintendo Power praised its bright graphics and goofy music, while G4 lauded it as a solid adaptation of the TV franchise. It also clinched the 2003 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite Video Game and later appeared in a 2005 Twin Pack cartridge alongside SuperSponge.
Storyline
In SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman, SpongeBob wakes up, plays fetch with Gary and discovers a treasure chest containing a mysterious bottle. Rubbing the bottle releases the Flying Dutchman, who vows to take Gary to work on his ghost ship forever. To save his pet, SpongeBob must travel across seven distinct locations, gathering nine letter tiles in each area that spell his name and unlock personal treasures once owned by the Dutchman when he was alive. Completing side‑quests – delivering food for Mr. Krabs, fixing Patrick’s antenna, helping Sandy with a bee‑infested dome, winning a jelly‑fishing contest, conquering Plankton’s “Chum World” rides, and battling Larry and Sandy in karate – yields the needed tiles and treasures, gradually weakening the Dutchman’s hypnotic power. Once mostly immune, SpongeBob boards the haunted vessel, rescues his friends, defeats the Dutchman by trapping him back in the bottle, and escapes on a flying boat to celebrate at the Krusty Krab.
