Summary

Nicktoads: Battle for Volcano Island—known in PAL regions as SpongeBob and Friends: Battle for Volcano Island—brings together a quirky squad from three Nickelodeon worlds. On the Game Boy Advance, Halfbrick handled the programming while the console versions were crafted by Blue Tongue Entertainment, and the whole package was released under THQ’s banner. You can jump into the shoes of six heroes, ranging from SpongeBob and Danny Phantom to Timmy Turner, each tasked with stopping the mysterious Mawgu from wrecking the island, while familiar faces like Jimmy Neutron and Squidward pop up as NPCs. The handheld version earned a respectable 69 on Metacritic, with UK and GameZone scores hovering around the 6‑7‑out‑of‑10 mark, suggesting solid, if not spectacular, fun for fans of the shows. A year later the series moved on to Nicktoons: Attack of the Toybots, expanding the crossover formula across multiple platforms.

Storyline

In the island world of Volcano Island, a trio of crabs led by the Wise Old Crab attempts a ritual at Summoner’s Rock to summon nine heroes and defeat their ancient foe, the Mawgu. The Mawgu shatters the summoning circle, scattering the heroes across the island. SpongeBob SquarePants and Danny Phantom are the first to appear before the Wise Old Crab, who warns them that the Mawgu has escaped, spreading a corrupting ooze and seeking vengeance. The crabs’ legend says the “Chosen Ones” can rescue the island and stop the Mawgu.

The duo soon encounters Timmy Turner, Sam Manson, Tucker Foley, Sandy Cheeks, Squidward Tentacles, and Patrick Star, while discovering a Jimmy Neutron communication device that explains a rift above the volcano is siphoning energy from Retroville, Bikini Bottom, Dimmsdale, and Amity Park. If left unchecked, the rift will consume those worlds and destroy the multiverse.

Guided by Jimmy’s blueprints, Tucker dispatches the heroes to gather parts for a Rift Zipper, a device designed to seal the rift. Once assembled, eight heroes descend into the volcano, confront the Mawgu, and keep him occupied while SpongeBob, Danny, and Squidward ascend using debris from the other worlds. The Rift Zipper drains the Mawgu’s strength, allowing the rift to close and sealing the villain forever.

After the victory, the Wise Old Crab and the island’s denizens congratulate the team. Jimmy opens a portal that returns each hero to his own world, concluding the adventure in SpongeBob SquarePants and Friends – Battle for Volcano Island (often called Battle for Volcano Island).
