Summary
Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace (often just called Mysterio's Menace) feels like a love letter to classic side‑scroll action on the GBA. You swing through seven distinct stages, each ending with a memorable boss—Hammerhead shows up twice, while Big Wheel, Electro, Rhino, Scorpion and the titular Mysterio cap the roster. The game lets you start on any of three opening levels, and each choice unlocks a new path that folds neatly into comic‑book‑styled cutscenes.
Combat is surprisingly deep for a handheld title: you can web‑swing freely, mix punches and kicks, and fire webs to trap or damage enemies. Along the way you gather upgrades that boost strength, health, and web capacity, plus special suits that guard against specific hazards. The ultimate reward is the Symbiote Suit, which slowly refills both health and web, making the final showdown feel rewarding.
Critics were kind to the game, earning it “favorable” scores on Metacritic, and Japanese magazine Famitsu gave it a solid 28/40. Its later Twin Pack re‑release with X2: Wolverine's Revenge kept the title in circulation for fans who still crave that retro web‑slinging thrill.
Storyline
Spider‑Man: Mysterio's Menace opens with Mary Jane Watson reminding Peter Parker to pick up a new fishbowl for their pet fish. A breaking news report pulls him into his Spider‑Man persona, and he spends the night chasing a string of crimes across New York. The rogues’ gallery includes Rhino, Hammerhead, Big Wheel, Electro and Scorpion, all operating under the direction of the illusionist Mysterio. After taking down each villain, Spider‑Man confronts Mysterio in the final showdown. Mysterio manages to flee, but his helmet is left behind. Peter brings the discarded helmet home, joking that it now serves as the couple’s new fishbowl. The game’s plot frames the battle as a fight against Mysterio’s mind‑warping tricks and his network of conspirators, with the ultimate goal of freeing Manhattan from the villain’s illusory grip.
