Summary

Spider-Man: Battle for New York lets you swing between rooftops as the web‑slinger or wreak havoc as the Green Goblin, and for the first time on a handheld you can decide when to boost Spider‑Man’s web tricks or Goblin’s fire blasts. The upgrade system feels surprisingly deep for a GBA title, letting you tailor each hero’s powers to your play style.

The game’s comic‑book flair shines in the cutscenes, which were drawn by Marvel artist Ron Lim, giving each story beat a vivid, panel‑like quality. A handy Threat Assessment Meter flashes on screen, pointing you toward the next crisis and counting down the seconds you have to resolve it before a game‑over.

Control‑wise, Spider‑Man follows the familiar button layout from its predecessor, while Goblin is steered solely with the D‑pad and face buttons, focusing on demolition and combat without any touch‑screen mini‑games.

Critics were lukewarm: Metacritic logged a 41/100 for the GBA version and GameSpot awarded it 4 out of 10, noting the uneven difficulty and repetitive missions.

Storyline

In Spider-Man - Battle For New York (Rising Sun) for the Game Boy Advance, Norman Osborn uncovers Peter Parker’s secret identity and the source of his powers. Determined to improve on the original, he applies his own “Oz Formula” to himself, transforming into the Green Goblin.

Believing his experiment a success, Osborn begins dosing others, turning Kingpin’s henchmen into a goblin army. Spider‑Man must unravel the plot and stop the Goblin’s takeover of New York. In the end, the Ultimates capture the Green Goblin and lock him away.
