Summary
Robopon 2 Ring Version (often just called Robopon 2) moves the quirky GBA sequel past its infrared‑powered predecessor by expanding the world threefold and packing in over 180 fresh Robopon. The game introduces “sparking,” where you fuse different battery types to hatch new creatures, and even lets you recolor them for a personalized touch.
Battles have grown into full‑scale four‑on‑four skirmishes, demanding strategic target‑selection, while a four‑player mini‑game mode adds local party fun. Although the GBA version drops the original GB‑Kiss infrared link, it retains the series’ hallmark of trading and evolving via unconventional items like household remote controls. Critics were lukewarm, earning a Metacritic 70, but GameSpot crowned it August 2002’s second‑best GBA release, highlighting the sheer amount of new content.
Storyline
Robopon 2 Ring Version continues the adventure of Cody, the reigning Legend of Porombo Island. After his boat is wrecked in a storm, he washes up on the continent of Majiko and discovers he has left his Robopon behind. Determined to become the Robopon champion of this new land, he must gather the unique XStones and challenge the rank‑holders of Majiko.
Dr. Zero, who survived the previous game thanks to his brother Dr. Zeke’s time‑travel, now holds the Legend0 rank, and Cody must defeat the Majiko rank‑holders to face him. Many of those rank‑holders have hidden the XStones, but Cody uses time‑travel to retrieve them, battling three cyborg users created by Dr. Zero along the way.
He also repeatedly crosses paths with the hapless Nick D, who is trying to collect an XStone to fund his orphanage, leading to frequent duels. The story weaves present‑day battles with trips back twenty years to set the past right.
