Summary

Robopon 2 Cross Version feels like a love‑letter to early‑2000s monster‑catchers while adding its own twists. After rescuing Cody from a storm‑wrecked boat, the game drops you into a world where you assemble Robopons by “sparking” batteries – every mix spawns a new creature, and you can even recolor them for style points.
The battle system jumps to four‑on‑four, meaning whole parties clash at once and targeting the right opponent becomes a mini‑puzzle. Over 180 brand‑new Robopons roam three times the areas of the original, and four‑player mini‑games pop up when you link up with friends via the GBA link cable.
Critics gave the title an average Metacritic score of 68, noting the loss of the first game’s infrared gimmick but praising the deeper roster and expanded exploration. GameSpot even ranked it the second‑best GBA release of August 2002, cementing its spot as a solid, if slightly under‑the‑radar, sequel to the Game Boy Color’s Robopon Sun.

Storyline

Robopon 2 Cross Version picks up after Cody becomes the number‑one Legend of Porombo Island. While sailing to new lands he loses his Robopon in a storm, wrecks his boat and washes up on the shore of Baba Village in the continent of Majiko. Determined to become the Robopon champion of this region, he must gather the unique XStones and challenge the rank‑holders that protect them.

Dr. Zero, who survived the previous game thanks to his brother Dr. Zeke’s time‑travel, now holds the mysterious Legend0 rank. To confront him Cody has to defeat the Majiko rank‑holders, many of whom have hidden the XStones. Using the same time‑travel mechanic he secures the stones and battles three cyborg Robopon users created by Dr. Zero.

Along the way he repeatedly runs into the comically weak Nick D, who is trying to collect an XStone to fund his orphanage. Their duels are light‑hearted, but each victory brings Cody one step closer to the Legend1 tournament and the final showdown with Dr. Zero.
