Summary
Riviera: The Promised Land invites you to team up with two divine‑wielding warriors on a demon‑hunting quest that clocks in at over 30 hours of role‑playing content. What sets the GBA version apart is its trigger‑based map navigation: you don’t free‑roam in the traditional sense, but instead move across screens by pressing directional inputs that correspond to glowing triggers, each costing or rewarding Trigger Points based on your performance.
Combat feels like a mix of tactical positioning and a broken‑item system; you choose three of five party members, decide on Attack or Magic formations, and select up to four items from a limited 16‑item inventory. Each character’s items behave uniquely—Cierra might unleash a magic blast with a staff, while Fia uses the same staff to heal.
The game also sneaks in dating‑sim flavor: dialogue choices with Fia, Lina, Serene, or Cierra affect trust and ultimately influence which of several endings you receive. Atlus’s 2005 North American release added nearly 200 voice clips, a rarity for a GBA title, and the soundtrack—largely composed by Minako Adachi—has remained beloved across its later PSP and HD remaster versions.
Storyline
*Riviera: The Promised Land* pulls heavily from Norse myth, referencing Ragnarök, Yggdrasil and the Asgardian gods. A millennium before the game’s events, demons from Utgard overran Asgard and the gods created black‑winged reapers called Grim Angels, each wielding a sacred Diviner. After the war the realm was renamed Riviera, a peaceful paradise tended by seven Magi and the Sprites.
When rumors of demon resurgence appear, Hector, a Magi, sends Grim Angels Ein and Ledah, with Ein’s familiar Rose, to awaken the hidden “Retribution” – a power that would wipe out demons but also raze Riviera. Ein awakens amnesiac in Elendia, cared for by Fia and Lina, and learns of the “Accursed” progenitors of evil. Together with Serene, Cierra and Rose they race to stop Ledah, who hunts the three Aquariums that sustain Yggdrasil.
Ledah reaches Yggdrasil and tries to crush the Aquariums, but the group only subdues him before the Grim Angel Malice, Hector’s pawn, lands the fatal blow. Malice shatters the last Aquarium; Ledah sacrifices himself to warn Ein that Hector seeks ultimate power. The heroes chase Malice into the Maze of Shadows, where Hector merges with the sealed Seth, becoming the monstrous Seth‑Rah.
Ursula revives the fallen girl, entrusting six with Riviera’s future.
