Summary

River City Ransom EX brings the beloved NES brawler to the Game Boy Advance with sharper graphics and a deeper role‑playing layer. You still control one of two teenage heroes fighting through city gangs to rescue the River City High students, but now you can shape each character’s growth, swap techniques, and even redesign outfits using secret shop items. The Western release is essentially a regional port of the Japanese version, keeping the original River City Ransom storyline and characters instead of the later Downtown Nekketsu cast.

Co‑op got a twist: the game drops true two‑player action in favor of an AI‑controlled partner, though you can exchange saved data so friends can team up later. A battery backup lets you store up to twelve fully customized characters, preserving stats, money, learned moves and even custom enemy appearances. On the fly, you can tweak AI behavior, enemy density and shop inventory reshuffling, and you can recruit up to three AI allies to form a posse that includes bosses from both the NES original and later Nekketsu titles.

Storyline

River City Ransom EX (often just called River City Ransom) follows two intertwined rescue missions in the chaotic streets of River City. In one thread, twin brothers Ryuuichi and Ryuuji Hattori arrive at Reihou Academy, quickly seizing control of nearby high schools with their "Double Dragon Brothers" fighting style. When Riki’s girlfriend Mami disappears, he receives a challenge from the academy and, despite his reluctance, teams up with Kunio—who is waiting outside his school—to storm the academy and save her. In a parallel storyline, high‑schoolers Alex and Ryan trek across River City, battling rival gangs and their leaders in a bid to reach River City High and free Ryan’s girlfriend Cyndi from the villain Slick. Both arcs blend classic beat‑'em‑up action with a quest to rescue loved ones.
