Summary
Reign of Fire lets you flip between two wildly different perspectives – one moment you’re a hardened survivor behind the wheel of a tank or jeep, the next you’re a growing dragon soaring over a scorched wasteland. The human side feels like a third‑person vehicle shooter, where every ride is armed with rockets and machine‑gun turrets, and a single lick of dragon fire forces you to scramble for water before the flames claim you.
When you take to the skies as the dragon, the game hands you a suite of fiery tools: fireballs for ranged hits, napalm breath to turn the ground to ash, and talons that can snatch enemies or debris and hurl them back as makeshift bombs. This dual‑playstyle keeps the action fresh, letting you switch from ground‑based gunplay to aerial devastation at a moment’s notice.
The title expands beyond the film’s storyline, sprinkling in extra creatures and military hardware that never appeared on screen. Critics gave it a mixed reception, noting the ambitious concept but uneven execution, which landed the game in the “mixed or average” bracket on Metacritic.
Storyline
Reign of Fire on the Game Boy Advance splits its narrative into two distinct campaigns – one for humans and one for dragons – each telling a different side of the same war. The human campaign loosely mirrors the film’s plot, while the dragon campaign covers the early years of the conflict and offers an alternate ending.
In the human story you play as “The Kid,” a fresh recruit of the Kentucky Irregulars, a paramilitary group led by Denton Van Zan. Based out of The Fort in Northumberland, the Irregulars defend survivors, fight off dragon attacks, and even rescue civilians. Van Zan’s theory that all dragons are female drives a daring raid on a Dover military base to steal eggs, and later a bold assault on London to kill the lone male dragon, The Bull, which The Kid ultimately slays.
Switching to the dragon side, you control a clever young dragon who helps her sisters destroy the Tower of London and a warship, clearing the city of human resistance. Later the dragon rescues captured kin from an armored train, then infiltrates the heavily‑armed Dover base, wiping out artillery, anti‑air guns and super‑guns. By 2020 the now‑mature dragon repeatedly harasses the Kentucky Irregulars at The Fort, and in the final mission an alternate ending sees the dragons, aided by The Bull, overrun the fort and cement their dominance.
