Summary
Polarium Advance lets you turn a stark black‑and‑white grid into a satisfying visual puzzle by drawing a single continuous line with the D‑pad and A button. Each stroke flips the tiles it touches, and when an entire horizontal row becomes uniform in color, that row vanishes, letting the tiles above cascade down. The game’s neutral gray border tiles don’t count toward the solution, but they let you flip disconnected groups in one smooth motion.
The title packs a hefty 365‑day puzzle calendar, split into Stage and Time modes, plus a Daily Polarium mode that challenges you to solve one new puzzle each day of the year. You can revisit cleared challenges via Polarium Reference, race against the clock in Time Attack, or unleash your creativity in Edit and Custom modes, where up to 100 self‑made puzzles can be saved and shared via passwords. Unlike its DS predecessor, the unpopular Challenge mode was dropped, letting the puzzle experience shine.
Three special tiles spice things up: Hurdle tiles block lines, Solid tiles cause everything above them to fall when cleared, and Multi‑tiles act as either black or white as needed. A simple color‑scheme toggle lets you swap the classic monochrome look for a splash of hue.
Critics gave Polarium Advance mixed but respectable scores—Metacritic averages 73/100, Eurogamer praised it with 8/10, GameSpot offered a 7/10, and Famitsu scored it 29/40—making it a solid, if not groundbreaking, addition to the handheld puzzle library.
