Summary

I fell into the wild world of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and instantly became a Pokémon myself, thanks to an uncanny personality quiz that matches a human’s traits to one of sixteen starter creatures. Paired with a partner‑chosen from the remaining roster, we plunge into endlessly shifting dungeons, hunting rescue jobs on bulletin boards, mail, or story prompts. Each floor demands careful hunger management, turn‑based battles using just four moves, and the occasional projectile item to fend off wandering foes. Completing a rescue, delivery, or escort rewards us with money and Rescue Points, which lift our rank and unlock tougher missions. A notable quirk is the six Pokémon exclusive to each version, giving collectors a reason to swap cartridges. Although a buggy DS link once risked erasing other GBA saves, Nintendo patched it swiftly. Red Rescue Team holds the honor of being the final Pokémon title on the Game Boy Advance, and it later resurfaced on Virtual Console and the 2024 Nintendo Classics service, keeping its roguelike charm alive for new and nostalgic players alike.

Storyline

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team places the player in a world populated entirely by talking Pokémon. After waking with amnesia, the protagonist remembers being human, a revelation that shocks the residents. Partnered with the first Pokémon they meet, they form a rescue team that aids Pokémon in distress across many dungeons. Natural disasters are escalating, prompting the team to take on increasingly urgent missions.

Their efforts attract the attention of rival teams led by Alakazam and Gengar, sparking a rivalry. A legend about a human cursed by Ninetales for stealing its tail seems linked to the protagonist, and townsfolk are convinced the player must be eliminated. With their partner’s support, the duo flees the town and journeys through remote dungeons, recruiting Absol, who seeks the true cause of the calamities.

The team eventually confronts Alakazam’s group, is rescued by Ninetales, and learns that the real threat is an awakened Groudon. After defeating Groudon and rescuing Alakazam, Xatu warns of an incoming meteor. Using a Teleport Gem, the heroes reach the sky, defeat Rayquaza, and convince it to destroy the meteor. The world is saved, but the player must return to human form, leaving the Pokémon world behind.
