Summary
Pocky & Rocky with Becky carries the classic KiKi KaiKai feel onto the Game Boy Advance, letting you pilot a miko—Pocky or Becky—or the tanuki Rocky, each wielding their own attack style. The story revolves around a hydra that has broken free, unleashing mythic monsters that you must dispatch across chapter‑like levels, unlocking each boss with a hidden key. In the North‑American version you survive two hits (one in Japan) and benefit from infinite continues, while the Japanese original is a one‑hit affair that feels noticeably tougher. Power‑ups boost firepower, grant defensive perks, or clear the screen, and beating the game reveals a password that opens a harder mode with new enemies and tougher bosses. Though scores are tallied at each chapter’s end, there’s no battery‑backed save; the title was showcased at Space World 2001 and launched in Japan October 2001, then in North America a year later via Natsume after a localized name change and added password system.
Storyline
In Pocky & Rocky with Becky for the Game Boy Advance, the peace is shattered when a ghostly hydra reappears after the seal Pocky placed is broken. The trio—Pocky, the shrine maiden, Rocky the mischievous tanuki, and Becky, another miko who originally starred in the KiKi KaiKai: Dotou‑hen spin‑off—join forces to track down the beast. Across multiple chapters they confront the hydra’s minions, using their combined abilities to restore the seal and put the monster back to rest.
