Summary

Twenty-two years after Pitfall Harry first swung across the Atari 2600, Pitfall: The Lost Expedition lands on the Game Boy Advance with a fresh batch of over fifty jungle‑filled stages. The levels whisk you through South American rainforests, icy glaciers, dark mines and crumbling ruins, each packed with classic hazards—vines to swing from, rolling logs, yawning pits and snapping crocodiles. Harry’s oversized cartoon head and lanky frame add a playful visual flair, while his knapsack lets you pull out tools that unlock new tricks as you collect scattered pages of the "Hero’s Handbook." The narrative kicks off when Harry’s treasure‑hunting plane crashes, leaving survivors hidden throughout the map; an older explorer hands him the handbook and urges him to rescue the crew and outwit a rival eco‑unfriendly gang. Torus Games’ handheld adaptation earned mixed reviews, landing a 66/100 on Metacritic and scores ranging from 2/5 on GameSpot to 7/10 on GameZone, reflecting a nostalgic yet uneven experience.

Storyline

In 1935, Pitfall Harry returns in Pitfall: The Lost Expedition to aid a beautiful archaeologist in rescuing her father and stopping the evil Jonathan St. Claire from seizing the lost city of El Dorado. As the fearless treasure hunter, players explore jungles, temples and rivers while battling a variety of animal foes such as scorpions, bats, piranhas, crocodiles and even penguins, alongside human enemies commanded by the sinister St. Claire. Throughout the adventure Harry recovers scattered pages of the Heroic Handbook, granting him new abilities and a range of useful items. He also encounters lost explorers and can collect golden idols, which serve as currency when trading with the Shaman. The game blends classic platforming with puzzle‑solving as Harry strives to protect the ancient treasure and save the archaeologist’s father.
