Summary

If you’ve ever imagined yourself as a master criminal, Payback lets you live that fantasy on the Game Boy Advance. The game is completely non‑linear – you simply need a set number of points to finish a level, and you decide how to earn them, whether by following a kingpin’s orders, hunting secret missions, or just causing chaos.

Combat feels like a handheld version of the original Grand Theft Auto, but with fresh camera angles and a wider arsenal. You can blast foes with shotguns, lob grenades, and even send remote‑controlled cars packed with explosives. The title also supports four‑player multiplayer deathmatch, and its 3D engine delivers smooth framerates and special effects across eleven distinct cities.

Originally a fan‑made Amiga clone of GTA, the project grew into a commercial release after Apex Designs expanded it to Windows, Mac and the GBA. Although a North American ESRB rating was secured, the GBA version never saw an official US launch, finally finding a publisher in DSI Games in late 2004. A sequel, Payback 2, arrived on iOS and Android in 2012, keeping the rogue‑like spirit alive.
