Summary
Pac‑Man Pinball Advance flips the classic maze chase into a handheld pinball experience, letting Pac‑Man himself become the rolling ball that scoops up dots and power pellets while the four ghosts give chase across two themed tables. The game sprinkles in multi‑ball action with Ms. Pac‑Man’s help and throws in mini‑games to keep the pace from feeling stale, rewarding players with points and upgrades for classic pellet collection. Critics were far from impressed: Metacritic and GameRankings hovered around the low‑50s, with GameSpot’s Frank Provo lambasting the graphics engine, physics, and the glaring omission of a high‑scores table, while GameSpy’s David Chapman called the whole package bland despite capturing the series’ feel. PALGN’s David Low noted that the visuals and physics were merely adequate and that the two‑table limit left the game feeling thin on content. In short, the title offers a nostalgic twist on Pac‑Man but struggles to deliver depth or polish on the Game Boy Advance.
Storyline
In Pac‑Man Pinball Advance, the four classic ghosts—Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde—kidnap every resident of Pac‑Land. Their scheme sets the stage for Pac‑Man to take to a pinball table, where the real action happens. The kidnapping serves only as a backdrop; the game’s focus is on the pinball mechanics rather than a deep narrative. Thus the plot exists mainly to justify Pac‑Man’s presence on the table.
