Summary
Oriental Blue: Ao no Tengai is a quirky off‑shoot of the Far East of Eden saga that drops you into “the Blue Land,” a stylized version of medieval Japan surrounded by China, Mongolia, Tibet and other East‑Asian cultures. You pick either Tenran or Aoi, a teenage duo hoping to earn a spot in the legendary Fire Clan that has safeguarded the realm for generations.
The game’s most striking feature is its free‑scenario system – missions can be taken in any order and the plot rewrites itself after major battles, even turning a boss loss into a new story branch instead of a game‑over. Navigation feels classic Far East of Eden, with an overhead overworld map and first‑person, turn‑based combat that rewards strategic spell use from its distinct magic system.
Beyond humans, the world buzzes with Turuk people, oni‑folk, lizard tribes, One‑Eyed folk and other exotic races, making exploration feel like a tour of a mythic East‑Asian patchwork. The result is a GBA RPG that feels both familiar and refreshingly open‑ended.
Storyline
In Ao no Tengai, a richly populated world of many races is thrown into chaos after the death of the heavenly emperor leaves the capital, Daido, without a clear heir. Fans often call it Oriental Blue, a nod to the vivid hue that defines its world.
Rumors spread that Daido will sink into the abyss, and strange monsters begin to appear across the lands.
The player steps into the role of a descendant of the Blue Clan, wielding an ancient manuscript that calls them to action.
The protagonist’s name can be chosen freely, and their gender determines which abilities and techniques are available.
