Summary
Open Season on the Game Boy Advance captures the filmās forest chaos with a surprisingly charming twist. You spend the bulk of the run helping various woodland creatures; once youāve completed enough of their errands, they join you as allies you can hurl at the bumbling hunters. Boogās specialty is flinging skunks into chimneys for a quick scare, while Elliot excels at sneaking, leaping, and luring foes into traps. After clearing the main adventure, the game unlocks a handful of singleā and multiplayer miniāgames that keep the fun going. IGNās Jack DeVries noted the title isnāt flawlessāanimations feel lazy and the soundtrack is mediocreābut praised its undeniable charm, cute characters, and cutscenes that feel a cut above the usual licensed fare.
Storyline
In the Game Boy Advance title Open Season, Boog, a 900āpound grizzly star of Timberlineās nature show, is awakened by Beth and thrust into a chaotic openāseason adventure. After a hunter named Shaw kills a buck, the buckāElliotāawakens and drags Boog into the Timberline National Forest, where they encounter McSquizzy the squirrel and his Furry Tail Clan, as well as members of Elliotās herd such as the doe Giselle and the hostile leader Ian. The duo helps various forest creatures, navigates a mineācart shortcut, escapes Shaw in a snowball, and repairs a beaver dam before Boog discovers Elliotās misguided directions caused a flood that separates them.
Boog later finds shelter in Shawās house, escapes the basement, and is pressured by McSquizzy to aid the forest animals against the hunters. With the help of Serge, Deni, and a flock of ducks dropping propane tanks, the wildlife gathers weapons and stages a counterāattack. During the final showdown, Shaw attempts to shoot Boog, but Elliot sacrifices himself, prompting Boog to defeat Shaw by hurling a skunk, rabbit and squirrel, then tying him up with his own gun.
The battle ends with the forestās victory, Elliot surviving the shot, and the animals celebrating their triumph over the hunters.
