Storyline

Need for Speed: Most Wanted takes place in the fictional Rust‑Belt city of Rockport, divided into three districts – Rosewood, Camden Beach and Downtown. The map mixes grimy industrial zones, affluent suburbs, wooded hills, a university campus and a downtown core, with roads ranging from coastal highways to winding mountain passes. The whole story unfolds between sunrise and sunset, giving the game a daytime feel unlike its night‑time predecessor.

The unnamed protagonist arrives in Rockport behind a custom blue‑and‑silver BMW M3 GTR E46 and quickly runs afoul of the Rockport Police Department’s task force led by Sergeant Jonathan Cross. Early on the player meets street racer Mia Townsend in a red Mazda RX‑8, then defeats Ronnie McCrea’s yellow Toyota Supra and his boss Razor Callahan’s black Ford Mustang GT. Razor’s henchman Bull Sato, driving a black Mercedes‑Benz SLR McLaren, steps in for a police‑interrupted race, and the player also faces Rog in a black‑and‑red Pontiac GTO before being warned that every Blacklist race is a pink‑slip event.

After losing a race to Razor and having the BMW sabotaged, the protagonist is arrested, released, and given a new car with Mia’s help. Climbing the Blacklist ranks, the player eventually challenges Razor again, wins, and discovers that Mia is an undercover RPD officer. She reveals her badge, the police move in, and the player escapes Rockport by jumping a derelict bridge in the BMW. The chase ends with Cross issuing a national warrant, setting the stage for the sequel, Need for Speed: Carbon.
