Summary
Max Payne on the Game Boy Advance manages to compress the original's gritty, neo‑noir vibe into an isometric, sprite‑driven format that still feels unmistakably 'John Woo‑heavy'.
The hallmark bullet‑time mechanic survives the jump to handheld, triggered by an on‑screen hourglass that fills as you thin‑out foes, letting you glide through gunfights in slow motion.
Weaponry ranges from pistols to shotguns and even dual‑wielded rifles, each stocked from the limited load‑out at the start of an act and restocked by picking up pickups scattered through cramped city streets.
Graphic‑novel interludes, complete with some original voice‑overs and Tom Kingsley’s moody soundtrack, break up the action and keep the story’s noir flavor intact despite the truncated level list.
Dynamic lighting and rain‑slicked backdrops give the pixel art a surprisingly atmospheric depth, while simple controls let you dive, strafe and aim without sacrificing the fluidity the series is known for.
Overall, this portable reinterpretation delivers a concise yet satisfying slice of Max Payne’s reputation for stylish gunplay and grim storytelling, proving the GBA can handle more than just platforming basics.
Storyline
Max Payne, a former NYPD officer turned DEA agent, lost his wife Michelle and newborn daughter Rose to junkies on the drug Valkyr. Three years later he goes undercover in the Punchinello crime family and meets Alex Balder in a subway. A shootout with Jack Lupino’s men kills Alex and frames Max.
Hunted by police and mob, Max tracks Vinnie Gognitti, learns Lupino is at his nightclub and kills him. He then meets contract assassin Mona Sax, who slips him a Valkyr‑laced drink, triggering a nightmare before he escapes a torture scene.
He teams with Russian mobster Vladimir Lem, secures a weapons shipment, and attempts to trap Don Angelo Punchinello, only to be ambushed. In Punchinello’s manor Max discovers the Don is a puppet and learns Valkyr originates from the Valhalla Project, a secret Aesir experiment ordered by Nicole Horne, who also ordered his family’s murder.
After exposing B.B.’s betrayal, Max is approached by the Inner Circle’s Alfred Woden. He fights up Aesir’s skyscraper, sees Mona again, and crashes Horne’s helicopter. The NYPD arrests him, but he spots Woden in the crowd, hinting at future protection.
