Summary
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance on the Game Boy Advance feels like a completely different beast from its console siblings. The handheld version strips the 3‑D spectacle down to a 2D side‑scroll beat ’em up, sprinkling in light RPG touches such as stat tweaking for each hero. Teams are built from ten selectable characters, grouped in threes, with a fourth non‑playable "striker" that can be summoned for a powerful screen‑clearing attack, and six additional striker heroes round out the roster.
Beyond the core brawler, the GBA port adds a handful of quirky modes: a S.H.I.E.L.D. Simulator, Time Challenges, Scavenger Hunts and a grueling Survival mode that keep the gameplay loop fresh. While the graphics are simplified and the character list trimmed, the extra missions and unlockables were enough for some to enjoy the experience.
Critics were far from kind. GameSpot slammed it as "uninteresting and sloppy" with a 2.5/10 rating, and IGN echoed the sentiment at 2.0/10, calling even the sprites and effects a disgrace to the Marvel license. In contrast, Gamer 2.0 awarded an 8.1/10, praising the abundance of bonus content despite the technical shortcomings.
Storyline
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance on the Game Boy Advance drops players into an original Marvel plot where Doctor Doom and his Masters of Evil launch a global takeover. After Doom’s forces cripple the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, Nick Fury calls in Captain America, Spider‑Man, Thor, Wolverine and others, who rescue the ship from Ultron sentries and set up a task force at Stark Tower. The heroes first thwart a crash‑landing Omega Base, stopping MODOK, Crimson Dynamo, Mysterio and rogue A.I.M. experiments while preventing gamma bombs from detonating.
The team then dives into Atlantis, using nano‑tech to breathe underwater, defeats Attuma’s mind‑controlled troops, topples Krang‑guarded towers, rescues Namor and slays the Kraken unleashed by Mandarin. After confronting Mandarin in the Valley of Spirits, they learn Loki was masquerading as the Mandarin’s ally. Mystical threats soon pull the heroes to Doctor Strange’s Sanctum, then to Murderworld where they battle mind‑controlled Jean Grey, Rhino, Shocker and Arcade’s mech.
A plunge into Mephisto’s realm forces a tragic sacrifice: one rescued hero is resurrected under Mephisto’s control, then gives their life to free the team. Meanwhile, an Asgardian invasion sees the heroes free Heimdall, Tyr and Balder, retrieve Odin’s shattered Twilight Sword and ultimately thwart Doom’s theft of Odin’s power with Uatu’s aid.
The climax takes place in Latveria, where the heroes combine a shard of the M’Kraan Crystal and Galactus’s Muonic Inducer to weaken Doom, allowing Odin’s lightning to banish him. The epilogue presents multiple branching outcomes based on side‑quests, ranging from curing the Legacy Virus to altering the fate of Atlantis, Asgard and the wider cosmos.
