Summary

Lunar Legend is a Game Boy Advance role‑playing game that re‑imagines the story of Lunar : The Silver Star with a new visual style and several gameplay tweaks. Characters are rendered in detailed 2‑D sprites, battles are turn‑based and static, and an Arts gauge fills as attacks land; once full a character can trigger a powerful “special attack” that can deal extra damage or grant temporary invincibility.

The title was developed by Media Rings after acquiring the rights from Game Arts, with original staff members acting as consultants to preserve the series’ feel. Ubisoft handled the North‑American publication and translation, opting for real‑time sprite‑based cut‑scenes instead of the voice‑acted videos omitted because the cartridge was limited to 8 MB. Ubisoft even enlisted a fan‑site webmaster to host the official English web page.

Critics praised the game’s vibrant sprite work and engaging combat, though some found the difficulty low and the audio forgettable. It earned a 30 / 40 score from Famitsu and was a runner‑up for GameSpot’s 2002 “Best GBA RPG” award, while also receiving mixed comments from reviewers familiar with earlier Lunar installments.

Storyline

In Lunar Legend, the goddess Althena reshaped the dead world of Silver Star into a livable land called Lunar, birthing three peoples: sturdy Beastmen, clever Humans, and the exiled Vile Tribe confined to the dark Frontier. Humans and Beastmen eventually set aside their quarrels and forged peace. Althena also forged four elemental dragons and appointed a Dragonmaster to safeguard the planet’s life‑force. Dyne became that Dragonmaster, teaming with Ghaleon, Mel and Lemia to calm the rogue black dragon, then sacrificed his power to turn the goddess into a mortal infant. Ghaleon, feeling betrayed, severed ties with Dyne, who vanished afterward. Centuries later, a curious boy named Alex from Burg, idolizing Dyne and the Four Heroes, departs on his own quest. Accompanied by his winged cat‑like friend Nall and his longtime companion Luna, Alex seeks to survive the dragons’ trials and protect Lunar from looming danger.
